How to incorporate a church In Nigeria

November 21, 2019

The body charged with the responsibility of incorporating a church in Nigeria is the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). A church is usually incorporated with registered Trustees who are the persons that hold the church in trust for other members of the church.

To incorporate a church, go to https://services.cac.gov.ng/  and register to create an account and login in. Then proceed to make a reservation of the name the church intends to bear. If the name is approved, it will be reserved with an availability code. The church must have a Board of Trustees elected by the members for the purpose of being trustees. These Trustees would be vetted to see if they have good standing in the society and this is a compulsory requirement usually done by the placing adverts in two national daily newspapers. This advert is to give the public due notice of the Trustees appointment by the proposed church. The notice is valid for 28 days after which the registration application can be put in.

The members of the church are also required to prepare an extract of the minute of meeting and a constitution that will guide the running of the church. The minutes must show adoption of the special clause as required by the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA). The next stage of registration process is to move to “New company registration “on the company Registration portal (CRP), enter the availability code gotten from the Notice of Approval printout. After all Forms have been completed and signed, you can then proceed to DOCUPLOAD on the Corporate Affairs Commission website to upload all documents individually.

Another important requirement is the common seal of the church. The seal should bear the name of the church and would be used to validate any document the church will sign in future hence its importance. The seal should be made during the registration process.

When the church is registered on the CAC online portal, you are required to take original copies of all documents uploaded along with the common seal for sighting at the Corporate Affairs Commission office selected as the pickup location to collect the certificate of incorporation.
